American Heart Month - National Wear RED Day!

February marks the start of American Heart Month, and in just four weeks – on Friday, February 7 – we will celebrate National Wear Red Day! This year, we invite you to join us in a powerful and visually striking campaign to raise awareness about heart disease by lighting up Philadelphia buildings in RED. (Feel free to wear red and encourage your colleagues to wear red that day, too!)

Why Go RED?

  • Cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 killer of women across the United States, including right here in Philadelphia and in South Jersey.

  • One in three women dies from cardiovascular diseases, a statistic that is eight times higher than breast cancer. Yet, many women still do not recognize their risk.

  • Immediate help is crucial: Only about 40% of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) receive the immediate help they need before professional help arrives. According to 2023 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics, among the over 356,000 OHCAs that occurred, only 40.2% received bystander CPR.

We gather to commemorate those who lost their lives during this challenging time and to honor the essential heroes who tirelessly worked to save others. As we light lanterns to represent the more than 1.2 million American lives lost, we create a beacon of hope and remembrance. This year, our event has a global reach. Thousands of people will be watching virtually, joining us from different corners of the world. Additionally, we are collaborating with the UK, where Belfast City Hall will also be illuminated in solidarity with our cause.

World Mitochondrial Disease Week

By lighting green, you’ll be joining international landmarks around the world to help raise awareness for mitochondrial disease (Mito), a little known but devastating genetic disease with no cure. Mito is a debilitating genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure and potentially death. It can cause any symptom, in any organ, at any age. Although 1 in 200 people may carry the genetic changes that could lead to Mito, few have heard of it. That’s why events like Light Up for Mito are so important.

Light Up for Mito is so important because there is no cure and for many the prognosis is very poor, including my daughter. Raising awareness conveys a strong message of hope, strength and unity to the Mito community.
