World Mitochondrial Disease Week

By lighting green, you’ll be joining international landmarks around the world to help raise awareness for mitochondrial disease (Mito), a little known but devastating genetic disease with no cure. Mito is a debilitating genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure and potentially death. It can cause any symptom, in any organ, at any age. Although 1 in 200 people may carry the genetic changes that could lead to Mito, few have heard of it. That’s why events like Light Up for Mito are so important.

Light Up for Mito is so important because there is no cure and for many the prognosis is very poor, including my daughter. Raising awareness conveys a strong message of hope, strength and unity to the Mito community.

Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Awareness Day - Light Up BLUE!

OUR MISSION: To provide and encourage more understanding & mutual support among anyone diagnosed with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC). There are over 400 different versions of AMC & 1 in 3,000 are born with this condition.

To create a higher standard of AMC Awareness by means of conferences (this year is our 18th Annual AMCSI Conference), meetings, studies, & provide medical information to families with AMC or their children with grants, scholarships & more!

BRIEF NONPROFIT HISTORY:  Ani Samargian (whose daughter has AMC) created www.amcsupport.org, an online AMC support group because there was very little information available to families due to the rare occurrence of AMC. The interest & activity of the online support group grew & blossomed; from the original 30 members, membership has continued growing to over 400 families.

AMCsupport.org brought families together for The First Annual AMC Conference, a real-world gathering in Chicago, Illinois, during the summer of 2006. A second Conference held in Arlington, Texas, in July 2007 brought even more families together. With the help of an army of volunteers, and the generous contributions of Roland Pieper, an attorney whose granddaughter has arthrogryposis, a Board of Directors was created, & work began on the daunting process of becoming a non-profit corporation & on September 7, 2007,, Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Support, Inc. was granted non-profit status as a  501 (C) (3) Corporation.

"Show Your Stripes Day” - Light up BLUE and/or RED!

"Show Your Stripes Day” – a day dedicated to growing global awareness about human-caused climate change, its cascading impacts to our health and our homes, and what we as a society can do to ensure a sustainable future for the people and places we love. Climate warming stripes powerfully illustrate the rise in Earth’s average surface temperature. Fueled by carbon pollution, this unprecedented global warming is influencing an increase in both the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including record-breaking heat waves, severe storms, and flooding rains in Philadelphia and across the world. On Show Your Stripes Day, our team at Climate Central would be thrilled for the BOMA Philadelphia Skyline to participate in this global campaign by showcasing the image of climate warming stripes, with the goal of helping to drive climate conversations and inspire the climate action needed now to secure a healthy and just future for all.

Commemoration of the 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence

On 12 June, the Republic of the Philippines will celebrate its 126th Independence Day. The Philippine Independence Day is the biggest annual event for the Filipino diaspora living in and outside the Philippines. The Consulate would like to highlight that there are an estimated of more than 10,000 Filipinos in Philadelphia City alone, over 50,000 in the State of Pennsylvania, and over 416,000 in the entire Northeast of the US. Marking this milestone is also a recognition of the invaluable contributions of Filipino immigrants to the United States, most especially the recent demonstration of selflessness, compassion, and heroism of Filipino nurses during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This lighting will honor all Filipino Americans who continue to make the US a beacon of democracy, freedom, and equality. The illumination will also serve as validation of the perseverance, hard work, and discipline demonstrated by immigrants, which in turn have contributed to the progress of US.

World Caring Day - Light up DARK PINK!

CaringBridge is celebrating the 3rd annual World Caring Day on June 7, 2024. In a world where 40% of unpaid caregivers report feeling isolated and unsupported, CaringBridge, a nonprofit, no-cost communication platform for family caregivers and the loved ones they support on a health journey, invites you to embrace the power of caring. World Caring Day is a time to take note of the incredible impact of caring and to remind ourselves that when we unite with connection and support for millions of family caregivers and their loved ones around the world, we have the power to change lives and create a world where no one goes through a health journey alone. Rosalynn Carter, Former First Lady of the United States, said, “There are only four kinds of people in the world –those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.”
